Attractions in Saalfeld and the surrounding area

As a former aristocratic town of residence, coining town, mining town and county town, Saalfeld invites many discoveries. Well-kept medieval buildings, including town gates, the magnificent Johanniskirche (St. John’s Church), the old Frankziskanerkloster (Franciscan Monastery) which today houses the Saalfeld Town Museum and the Saale town landmark, the „Hohe Schwarm“(High Swarm), the remains of a town castle, built in 1300, all characterise the towns image, which also boasts the nickname “Steinerne Chronik Thüringens” (Stone Chronicle of Thuringia). Saalfeld is a very convenient point of departure for further trips within Thuringia and is always worth a visit.
